new style

so here's where we start progressing with the hand-drawn style. this seems to be the way to go... it's a lot easier to do facial expressions, and allows me to just toss in a bunch of background objects or props without having to 3d model them or do the vectors in illustrator. it'd been maybe six years since i really drew anything i'd call a 'finished piece', so i get the feeling i'm going to be a bit rusty for awhile. it is coming back to me a lot more quickly than i'd hoped, so i should really start feeling comfortable by strip 20 or so :)

Thank god baseball is over ...

I used to think that watching baseball on television was only slightly better than having nails pounded into my eyes. But, as I have matured, I have come to respect baseball as a viable form of vapid entertainment. I still think that the players are overpayed primadonnas. Grown men being paid a king's ransom to play a child's game. Now is not the time for a gripe about the compensation schemes for professional athletes -- I'll save that diatribe for the next strike year. Today is basically going to be a shot at the broadcast networks and their spinelessness.
I can imagine the conversation at NBC, ABC, CBS:
"holy shit a couple of people are actually watching baseball this year."
"Shit, Johnson! Take the new episodes off the air, now. It;s reruns only, every night of the week - just in case those wily bastards at Fox change around the days of the World Series!"
In past years, I used to resent Fox tremendously. They would stick with baseball, often to the detriment of new shows. I've lost count of the new Fox shows that didn't survive baseball. Fox has a much higher percentage of new shows that pique my interest in any given year, but often those shows die due to baseball. After 3 weeks of baseball, most viewers are committed to crap on the other channels, and the new stuff is stillborn before it gets a chance.
This year though, enough people were watching the early parts of the divisional series that all the networks postponed their new programming. As a SF Bay area resident, my interest in this year's post-season ended early. This left me searching the dial, catching pieces of the odd bowflex infomercial, or watching univison with the volume muted. The last couple of weeks were like TV purgatory. The seasons have changed enough that it gets dark fairly early, which sent me indoors.
Now that the marlins have won it all, hopefully we can get some new goddamn television. As much as I have come to enjoy watching baseball ... I am in dire need of a new simpsons episode.
