better late than never

updates in the next month or so will not even come close to resembling clockwork. i have a ton of things on my plate, not least of which is moving.
i was involved in a garage sale for the first time. i went into it thinking two things. 1) this is going to suck, 2) this is going to suck a lot of my time. i was only half right. it sucked my entire weekend up, but it was actually pretty fun. i remember hearing horror stories of people haggling you down from 25 cents to 22 cents, and critiquing one of your items and then going on to explain why it should be worth less than that. i guess the novato crowd aren't psychotic... a few of them offered less than the sticker price, to which we gladly said "yes", but mostly they just kind of grabbed stuff and paid what we wanted (which was really cheap anyway). we walked away w/ $100, but more valuable than that, a few hundred pounds less of stuff to move.
the new place isn't as nice as the one we're in now, but it has some serious advantages. first off, it's right across the street from the school my girlfriend is going to. also, we're gaining an extra bedroom, which is great. it'll be nice to have an office. we're also gaining an extra bathroom, which is one of those things that i think will be infinitely more useful than either of us could imagine. we've never had a problem sharing one bathroom, but i can just see all sorts of uses springing up just because we have a second now. weirdest part of the whole move process? no longer having a 415 area code.
brief recap of movies: liked stepford wives, liked harry potter (have to disagree w/ dante about it being the best, but it was certainly worth seeing), rented "elephant" - loved it until i found out what it was about, and then it pissed me off. the directing and cinematography was really unique and beautifully done, the acting was awesome... the subject matter? why did they have to do that? jerks.
that's about it - sorry for being so sporadic, but my life needs to settle down before i can get serious again.

NBC and the Tuesday Reality Duo

I am glad somebody is putting some new TV on during the summer. I wish a network was willing to respect us enough to put a 'real', scripted show on for summer, but I'll take what I can get.
Last Comic Standing was a favorite show of mine last year. This season is better than last already, and its not just because the "competition is tougher". the single largest improvement over last year is that there isn't the one guy that America will 'feel sorry for'. The first season put one a single guy who was just a little too sympathetic for the audience to crush him. They didn't make the same mistake this year. Or, if they did, they haven't tried to give it away to us yet.
This might sound like a tangent, but I swear it'll come to a point. In an interview, David Letterman once said that his favorite guests were the ones who came onto the show to perform. He appreciated it when they didn't just come to sell a new movie, and instead they tried to actually entertain people. Last Comic Standing picked more than one candidate for exactly this reason. Todd Glass is the most obvious of that list. This guy is just constantly acting like a fool, and its going to buy him a lot of screen time. Say what you like about his act, but the guy understands what this show is about.
The same is true on Next Action Star. I think her name is Viviana. That girl can't speak a full sentence without 'adjusting' herself. Oh, and her wardrobe is .. I think risque is PC enough. That girl couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, but she'll be on the show for quite a while. Eventually talent will win the day.
And the 'judges' on that show are the most transparent bunch of marketroids I have ever seen. Since they can feel free to skew the results however they need in order to keep the ratings-friendly contestants alive, I can see this show really falling flat later. If they don't keep a couple of people who can really 'act' ... who am I kidding, they're looking for an action star. If you have good skin and they can find a stunt double with similar bone structure you'll have a shot.
