My new powerbook --

I bought a new powerbook last week (12" superdrive for anyone keeping score). There was a lot of internal dialog when it came to what the appropriate computer was going to be for me. I don't intend to incite a discussion about the relative merits of one operating system or platform, so let's assume for the sake of this conversation that I was resolved to get a mac. Once we remove that variable from the equation it boils down to a discussion of the relative merits of the different macs on the market today.
On the one hand, there's the desire for power. This kind of megalomania is exactly what pushes a person toward the dual 2GHz towers. If we continue to limit the field to macs, it is unquestionably the big dog. I look at those machines, and watch them chew through certain multimedia tasks and I feel a longing deep in myself. A primal, almost animal lust. But there are, as always, other factors to consider.
Another item to consider is portability. I have several desktop computers. My purchasing rationale for the first of these PCs was based, as mentioned above, on an unreasonable thirst for power. You just couldn't get the kind of video, CPU, or main bus speed in a laptop that was available in a laptop. It was a dual processor box, loads of RAM, dual CD burners, internal RAID. That machine was a beast though. There were no LAN parties in that behemoth. So the second of these PCs was a small form factor enclosure. Imminently more portable than a full tower, but still constrained. Neither of these computers answered a very simple need of mine. When I'm watching CSI and want to check my email, how do I do that without leaving the couch? Fine, a laptop is what I need. Besides, I still have a tower for those times when 32MB of video RAM won't cut it. At those times I'm not going to be multi-tasking anyway.
When you start talking portables in the mac arena though, a new consideration comes into play: price. Has anyone looked at the price tags attached to the 17" powerbook? Yeouch! Like I said earlier, I have the loaded machine when that need arises, I'm looking for something a little more reasonable. The iBook is more attractive from a price consideration, but its feature-low. I'm looking for a good balance between features and price.
Serendipity sometimes shines on the undeserving though. A friend at the Apple Store alerted me to a sweet price discount available on 12" superdrive powerbooks. This allowed me to get a powerbook, essentially, at an iBook price. (Not really, but close enough.) It was the opportunity I'd been holding out for, and it just fell into my lap. (Wow, that looks like a bad pun, and for that I apologize.)

starsky and hutch

i have this love/hate relationship with the part of me that likes to compare a new version of something to the old version. i basically lose any sense of objectivity when viewing the remake, since i'm always thinking "that's not how it was, that's different, why did the do that?"... this also makes it difficult to enjoy the movie/book/show/what have you. i'm a lot better about it than i used to be. purism has its place ($&%# you lucas for jar-jar!), but if everything is going to change anyway, there needs to be a certain amount of rolling-with-the-punches to get enjoyment out of something.
i haven't seen the original 'starsky and hutch' series. i don't know how true to it they kept, and i don't care. i enjoyed the movie a lot. it was campy without going overboard, and pretty damned funny. owen wilson and ben stiller when taken seperately kind of suck as actors, but when put together, work well. seeing the original series would probably have ruined this for me the way reading the lord of the rings books kind of killed the movie version of 'two towers'. eventually i'm going to have to just relax and see a remake as a standalone entity, or just see ones where i don't have a basis of comparison.

did some fan art for "stoopid pigeon". have a look. i usually have enough on my plate, but couldn't sleep saturday night, and wasn't in the right state to work on fd, so i knocked that out.
stoopid pigeon isn't for everyone, but i love it. if you liked the movie, play or comic "american splendor", then there's a good shot of you liking stoopid - it has this amazing realism to the writing, and the art style is so fitting to the mood of the comic. it can get offensive (sex, violence, etc...), so it's not for the squeamish, but it's up there with the best of them if you can take it (or understand it :)

For those of you who have never been to the apple website before, or have never seen a powerbook, I thought I'd include a link to my new toy. The apple store is always an option for purchasing one of your own, or you could use amazon. If you follow this link to buy one (or anything else from amazon for that matter), that would be super neat-o: Powerbooks at Amazon.
