Laryngitis, an inflammation in the vocal cords in the larynx.
Bronchitis, an inflammation of the bronchi -- the main air passages to the lungs.
Bronchitis + laryngitis = my ass in bed for a week.
because of this fun-ness, my two week break from work was cut down pretty dramatically, and i'm not going to be able to make my deadline tomorrow. so, instead of putting up some random pic, or a 'sorry, but i'm dead - check back later' message, i'm going to put up what i've got so far. call it a work-in-progress strip, for all those interested in the different steps needed to complete a strip. i fully intend to color the strip sometime tomorrow, and hopefully shade it as well, health permitting.
so the last panel was the first one i did, and it was really just reworking the hand and face of adam to be dante. i also needed to modify the painting a bit more to make it better fill the panel. i removed some distracting stuff, and filled in corners that were left white from when i rotated the image. very little sketching, inks, colors or shading was needed here - it was just a straight up photo-retouch.
the bluelines for this strip (the original quick sketch) were pretty appalling, since they were done in a serious hurry, so i'm not going to show those to you this time. eventually i'm going to put up a tutorial, and show you some of the better bluelines i did.
the next step is the 'inking' stage, which is where panels 1-4 are now. that involves drawing over the bluelines to make nice crisp edges that i can later color in. i'll write a bit more tomorrow about the process of 'coloring' (and hopefully 'shading') when i post some more.
anyway, it's off to hack up a bunch of phlegm, hit the vicodin and take this back up tomorrow. sorry about not giving you a finished strip, but hopefully seeing some of the intermediate stages will be interesting enough.

Best intentions ...
posted by Dante on 12.30.2003 - 5:12 pm
Well, despite our best intentions, it looks like we are going to wind up taking a holiday break. Hopefully its only going to be one week. It all depends on how long our artist spends in the local ER. I swear. Like I give a damn if he's constantly vomiting and suffering from every conceivable respiratory infection known to medical science. If you're conscious you can probably hold a stylus. Am I right here?
Okay, maybe I'm being a little harsh. The poor sap did just waste 2 weeks of vacation in one of the most disgusting physical conditions imaginable. This is one of those times that I wish I was capable of feeling honest emotions, then I could feel sorry for him. As much as I want to keep kicking him in his sack until he stops moving, he's probably more deserving of some compassion.
That's as close as your gonna get to sympathy though, buddy. Don't think I'm gonna let you make a habit out of this kind of behavior.

colors

so, the colors stage is up. this is where all of the base colors are set in before the shading occurs. it's kind of like taking the magic markers and coloring in the lines. the comic starting to look a lot more gelled together, but still lacks that special something that makes it nice to look at.
turns out i got strep as well, but after getting a shot of penicillin, that went down real fast. i'm feeling quite a bit better today, and may have the energy to work a bit more.
the inks discussed in the last rant can be found here

the week i pissed off god
posted by Christopher on 1.2.2004 - 5:14 pm
fine... i get it, no more graphic depictions of flipping off god.
after returning from the week of expactorating fun, i came back to a pretty decent-sized flooded area of our bedroom. fortunately nothing was severely damaged, but my landlord is going to have fun getting the smell out of the carpet. that being said, it's back to moving our bedroom out of our bedroom so i can sleep tonight without fear of getting some mold infestation in my already fucked up lungs and chest. no update, not sure when i'm going to get to the shading... maybe somewhere between the point where my tap water turns to blood and the locusts come.

shading!
posted by Christopher on 1.4.2004 - 9:25 pm
yes, with 2 hours and 40 minutes of front page life left in this strip, the shading is finally going up.
shading is where all the lights and darks are added to give dimension to the characters and objects. it's where the flat gray can becomes aluminum, where all the lighting effects are added, shadows and stains on the carpet, etc. this is what gives the strip visual interest.
anyway, i'm off to bed... still need to rest up. enjoy the final 'finger of god'
